WHAT IS A REVERSE MORTGAGE?

A reverse mortgage, also known as a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), is a tax-free loan that turns your property equity into fast cash.
The loan is insured by the Federal Housing Administration and can be received in one of three ways:

Unlike other mortgages, a reverse mortgage does not require monthly payments towards the reimbursement of the loan.
Instead, the loan amount is collected in full when the borrower leaves the possession of the home – either because he or she is selling it or because the borrower has passed away.
To ensure that the loan amount does not exceed your property’s value, the federal government defines certain guidelines and provides mandatory counseling before loan closure.

The property must be your primary residence
